SUV Reliability Comparison: Nissan Vs Toyota

Posted on

SUVs are one of the most in demand vehicles right now, mainly because they are powerful, safe, and offer large interior space. Due to the increase in demand for SUVs, most car manufacturers in the automotive market right now are increasing production of the SUV.

Not all vehicle manufacturers are capable of producing reliable SUVs. In fact, there are only few car makers that are able to release SUV models that are dependable, for example, Nissan and Toyota. Both of these companies continue to better their existing SUV models in the market. They also compete with each other for customers and greater market shares.

In order to determine which of these two have the most reliable SUVs, this article will provide a brief comparison of their current models which includes the following.

1. 2011 Nissan Xterra vs. 2011 Toyota FJ Cruiser

The 2011 Nissan Xterra and the 2011 Toyota FJ Cruiser are among the top SUV models from Toyota and Nissan that are currently competing with each other in terms of reliability. Both of these vehicles are considered as a midsize SUV and they also have the same 4.0L V6 engine. In addition to this, the Xterra and the FJ cruiser are offered in 4×2 as well as 4×4 versions.

In terms of body construction, the Xterra has a sturdy body with on-frame construction, while the FJ Cruiser is built on a truck based-frame chassis. They both have relatively ground clearance which allows them to tackle the rough road conditions when taken off-road.

There is one feature that makes the FJ Cruiser inferior to the Xterra in terms of body construction and this is the layout of its doors. Yes both of them have four-doors, but the Cruiser’s rear doors are only half the size of what the Xterra’s. Due to this, the rear passengers find it difficult to enter and exit the FJ’s rear doors. In addition to this, there are a lot of blind spots on the FJ’s doors which ultimately affects the drivers’ visibility. The Nissan Xterra’s doors on the other hand have wider windows, a characteristic that improves the driver’s visibility.

In terms of handling and performance, the Xterra proves to be more reliable and capable compared to the FJ Cruiser. The Xterra’s 4.0L V6 engine produces up to 261 horsepower while the FJ Cruiser’s similar engine produces 259 horsepower.

Aside from the above differences, the Xterra has a lot of other features that enhances its off-road performance compared to the FJ Cruiser. For example, the Xterra has skid plates, selectable driving rear differential, hill-start assist, and hill-descent control, all of which are not found on the FJ Cruiser. Given this, it is quite obvious that the 2011 Toyota FJ Cruiser is much less SUV for your money compared to the 2011 Nissan Xterra.

2. 2011 Nissan Pathfinder vs. 2011 Toyota 4Runner

The 2011 Nissan Pathfinder and the 2011 Toyota 4Runner are also subjected to constant comparison. This is probably because both of these SUVs are among the most preferred brands of buyers and they always have a hard time in deciding which of the two is more reliable. To help these confused buyers, let’s compare the two models briefly.

The Pathfinder is a large, heavy, and sturdy SUV, and so is the 4runner. Both of them are also built on stronger platforms, which is a characteristic that makes them almost similar in terms of reliability. However, additional features such as Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDSS), hill-start assist, and hill-descent control, which are found on the 4Runner, is what separates these two SUVs from one another. In addition to this, the 4Runner’s 4.0L V6 engine is capable of producing 270 horsepower, while the Pathfinder’s similar engine produces a little less output of 266 horsepower. Due to this difference, the 4Runner seems to be more capable in taking on some of the roughest driving conditions as compared to the Pathfinder. Given this, it is quite obvious that the 4Runner is more reliable compared to the Pathfinder.

Given the two sets of comparisons from Nissan and Toyota, it is quite clear that both of these car manufacturers are capable of producing reliable and tough SUVs. However, the reliability of their vehicles usually varies depending on the model. It is possible that Nissan might emerge as more reliable in some SUV models compared to Toyota and visa versus. Given this situation, it is important for car buyers to know what their driving needs are and what they expect out of an SUV. By doing this the car buyer can make their choice easier.
